A Private Tour of Notre Dame
You’ve seen images of Notre Dame your entire life. The immaculate rose window. The stirring sculptures. The proud towers. It’s lived in your imagination as the home of Quasimodo and as the Gothic cathedral par excellence.
Now, isn’t it time you took a private tour of Notre Dame?
We offer guided, individualized tours that bring you up-close and personal to this legendary, world-historic site.
And there’s never been a better time.
With the first round of renovationsis finished, the cathedral is allowing private tours for groups of 6 people in 2025, after the Sunday Jun 8 (Pentecost) with mandatory reservation online (in March 2025)

We’ll highlight the treasures inside and the outside, the architectural features, the much-photographed western façade, the famous rose windows, the timeline for the full restoration, and many more !
Masterpiece of Gothic Architecture
Gothic architecture stands as one of the great advancements in human engineering as well as forming a visual style that is still haunting, profound, and undeniably sacred.
All of the major features of Gothic architecture can be found at Notre Dame, and they have all been taken to their absolute heights here.
Notre Dame’s Façade
When you first enter Notre Dame, you look upon its western face—made up of two towers, the rose window, and the three portals into the building.
Above the portals, elaborate sculpture tells the core teachings of the Bible, allowing Christians of all backgrounds and literacy levels to appreciate the cosmos as described in their faith.
The Portal of the Last Judgment
The most impressive of these is the central one, called the Portal of the Last Judgment. It was installed between 1220 and 1230.
The lintel (the beam directly above the doorway) shows the dead rising and being judged. Among them are figures like a pope, a king, women, soldiers, and an African man. Angels blow trumpets, to signal the resurrection. Over them, the Archangel Michael weighs the souls of the dead—not unlike Anubis in Egyptian mythology—while demons try to influence the scales (this cartoonish, playful detail is common in Gothic sculpture).
On one side, the blessed are led to paradise, while on the other side, the damned are dragged to hell by demons.
On the tympanum (that semi-circle that stands on top of the lintel) shows Christ in his glory, showing the wounds he received at crucifixion.
The Rose Window
While there are three rose windows (or rosettes, the stained glass windows in the circle shape), the western one is by far the most seen, given its prominent placement—but all of the rose windows are masterpieces.
It combines the red and blue colors so important to Christian imagery. The red refers to the bodily reality of Jesus (red like blood), and the blue refers to the heavenly nature of Christ (blue like the sky).
Imagery in the western rose window is quite stunning, it includes:
-
In the center, a picture of the Madonna and Child (or Mary and Jesus as a baby)
-
Surrounding the center are images of the 12 tribes of Israel
-
Along the top half are each of the vices and virtues shown in pairs (Humility vs. Pride, Kindness vs. Envy, Patience vs. Wrath, Diligence vs. Sloth, Charity vs. Greed, Temperance vs. Gluttony, Chastity vs. Lust)
-
Along the bottom half are the 12 signs of Zodiac and the labors associated with each month of the year
Notre Dame’s Restoration
2025 - 2027
Notre Dame faced a devastating fire on April 15, 2019 (caused by an accidental spark during restoration work). But as with crises in the past, this Gothic cathedral has reemerged.
Beginning on December 8, 2024, Notre Dame will be open to the general public. A free online ticket office and a mobile application are also due to be launched in the fall.
This will allow you to start taking tours of Notre Dame, and we’ve lined up the best tour guide for this once-in-a-lifetime experience (read more below for our special offer).
Though tremendous progress has been made, the work is not entirely done. The timeline continues in the years ahead:
-
2025: the restoration of the chevet and the sacristy
-
2026: the installation of stained glass windows
-
2027: Forecourt, façade enhancement, and landscaping

Combine Your Notre Dame Tour With One of These Unforgettable Paris Landmarks…

After visiting Notre Dame, there are still so many landmarks in Paris worth exploring. The following list includes nearby locales that combine important historical weight, breathtaking beauty, and that special Parisian flair:
This immaculate building along the Seine is on the same island as Notre Dame, making it a perfect site to pair with a tour of the cathedral. And here, you go from a Gothic masterpiece to a storybook castle with a rich history.
It was originally built as a fortress when Roman governors ruled the city. It eventually became the palace for the King of France. Over the centuries, it later played host to courts and a prison. That makes it the backdrop for so much of Parisian history—though admittedly it has changed a lot since it was first settled by Romans.
Being so close by and offering such a deep look in the history of Paris makes the Conciergerie a perfect pairing with your Notre Dame tour.
Built by Saint Louis—perhaps the most pious king in French history—Sainte Chapelle was first and foremost a reliquary. It was here that the most treasured religious relics of the country were held, surrounded by heartrending stained glass that remains one of the most awe inspiring architectural marvels in all the world.
Though the relics have since been moved out of the building, the stained glass remains. Today, visitors are still stunned by the sophistication of the engineering—allowing for the very high ribbed-vault ceilings to seemingly rest their weight on cliff-faces of glass.
A fellow Gothic masterpiece on the Île de la Cité, Sainte Chapelle is a wonderful experience to go along with your private tour of Notre Dame cathedral.
Since the Middle Ages, the Latin Quarter has been an intellectual hotbed. Here, you can find illustrious institutions of higher learning—including Sorbonne University and Paris Cité University, among others.
That reputation for the area is no doubt why you can find landmarks like the Shakespeare & Co. bookshop and the enormous Abbey bookshop (both famous and English-language). You can also see the wondrous Church of Saint Severin, a delightfully articulated Gothic alternative to Notre Dame.
By crossing the Seine and exploring the Latin Quarter after your cathedral tour, you’ll expand the horizons of your trip—and you might find a book to take home as a souvenir!
Right across the Seine from Notre Dame is Le Marais, the traditional Jewish quarter of the city and the Medieval heart of Paris. Must-see attractions include the Hôtel de Ville, the informative (and well appointed) Musée Carnavalet that focuses on the city’s history, and the modern art mecca of Centre Pompidou.
It is also the best place in Paris to absorb Jewish culture. The food, music, and religious observance found here is like a home-away-from-home for many visiting the city.
Because of the wonderful restaurants here, Le Marais is a smart destination to go after your private tour of Notre Dame cathedral. You’ll be able to find a delicious bite to eat before heading out and taking in more wonders of the city.
